NVIDIA powers Europe’s 35-supercomputer sovereign AI initiative.

Europe announced one of the largest hardware expansions in history: the development of 35 new NVIDIA AI supercomputers spread across 23 countries.
This isn’t just another data center expansion. This new network is designed to deliver up to 20 exaflops of AI training performance. To put that in perspective, a single exaflop represents one quintillion operations per second. By bringing these systems online, the continent is equipping more than 3 million researchers with next-generation infrastructure.
The Shift to Sovereign AI
For the past few years, the narrative around artificial intelligence has been heavily dominated by a handful of private North American labs and massive commercial cloud providers. Europe, meanwhile, has often been viewed primarily as a regulator, focusing heavily on policy frameworks rather than raw hardware capability.
But intelligence isn’t just software. It depends on physical infrastructure. If a nation has to rent all its compute from foreign corporations, its technological independence is incredibly fragile.
This is what sovereign AI looks like in practice. Rather than relying on foreign cloud providers for frontier computing, Europe is investing in its own AI infrastructure, ensuring that future scientific research, industrial innovation, and national security capabilities can be built on domestic compute.
What Happens Next?
The sheer scale of this computing power will be directed at some of the hardest physical and scientific problems we face. The buildout aims to accelerate research in climate science, biomedicine, and sustainable energy—without relying on foreign compute.
Having this hardware on domestic soil means European scientists won’t have to wait in line or deal with international data transfer restrictions to run complex simulations, discover new synthetic drugs, or model next-generation power grids. They will have the raw computational horsepower they need right in their own backyard.
Compute Becomes Strategic Infrastructure
As artificial intelligence continues to advance, compute is becoming as fundamental to national security as electricity, energy, or semiconductor supply chains. The global AI race is no longer just about writing better software; it’s about building the physical infrastructure that powers intelligence itself. Europe’s supercomputer network reflects a broader reality: the nations that own the infrastructure for intelligence will have a decisive role in shaping its future.
